My Makeup Journey

My first Photo shoot

The day of my first photo shoot I was very nervous and I felt sick in my belly, wondering what I went and got myself into. I never been on set of a shoot before and I haven’t really done much makeup for anyone or anything at this stage. I was so worried I won’t be any good or be able to pull this off but it was all too late it was shoot day the model was arriving and I had to be ready. I may not have had much self confidence at the time but I didn’t let it show and I didn’t let on it was my first gig. Although I didn’t get paid for this gig I got paid with experience and that was worth every moment.

Leading up to the shoot I did my research spoke with all the team members regarding their desired outcome and what they where looking for in the over all feel of the shoot. I explored the theme took note of all the colours and dresses the model would be wearing and got to work on designing a couple of looks for the shoot. I shared my ideas with the group and some face charts to show them my train of thought. They loved my ideas, I was ready for the big day.

Shoot day! The model arrived and I sat her in the makeup chair, she was so tall but so welcoming (even though it was my house) she made me feel at ease and I started to prepare the skin ready for my creativeness. A pinup feel for a pinup fashion label Sarsparilly. Once I prepped the skin I got to work on the eyes then the foundation/base and the lastly the hair. All ready to go we head to location where I meet for the first time in person the designer and the photographer both was so welcoming and encouraging. The shoot went to plan the model looked amazing in every dress and the hair and makeup complemented every dress. Touch ups and dress changes where very interesting to be at an old train station with others coming along watching what you are doing was a great experience.

I learnt so much on the first shoot that I appreciated every minute of it. I felt very short against the model but I have come to realise I will feel short next to any model and that is ok. I learnt that my makeup skills speak volumes and I learnt that I loved being on set creating images that can last beyond a lifetime. Creating and capturing the feel of a scene is one unique experience. Working with a team was encouraging and exciting all at the same time.

The makeup look I ended up going for was very retro 1950’s in keeping with the label I was working with. I used soft pinks on the eyes and cheeks with a strong winged eyeliner to go. I used a pink lipstick that was strong to make the lips pop. The foundation was kept to match the models skin and was dusted lightly with a setting powder to remove the shine. Hair design was a tight wavy curl to match, this created a beautiful frame for the model and a base for when we used hats.

This day showed me that anything can happen and dreams can come true. I loved every minute of it and was very excited to keep going. I hated waiting for the images but they where worth the wait. I guess the hardest part of being a makeup artist is waiting to see the images when you work on a photo shoot. To book me in your next photo shoot contact me for booking details and prices.

Dreams can come true!

Hello, my name is Jasmine I am a freelance makeup artist living in the Newcastle area of NSW, Australia. I first became a makeup artist around a year ago, after I completed a diploma in beauty therapy in 2016. Although I loved all aspects of the beauty industry I found I wasn’t able to be creative. Whilst completing my beauty therapy course I completed a makeup module and fell in love with makeup. Over time I learnt how creative makeup can really be, this is where my passion for makeup and becoming a makeup artist started.

I first started experimenting with makeup on myself and trying different brands as I looked for a diploma course for makeup. I found a course that was perfect, I got to learn all different aspects of makeup not just in one area, I’ve learnt a lot about bridal, theatre, production, photography and even SFX. I have found that my knowledge has grown in many of the areas of makeup from hygiene, lighting effects, and creating a look perfect for the individual.

Over the past year I have found myself working on many photo shoots firstly it was to build a portfolio to show you what I am able to do and to network. I found I was becoming creative and enjoying every aspect of it. Looking through the images over the course of the year I have seen a significant improvement of my skills and abilities and I am very proud of how I have grown.

I decided to create my own business to be able to get up and work every day as a makeup artist. Working as a makeup artist, is a dream that is now my reality. Dreams can come true if you put your mind to it. It isn’t always easy to juggle life and all the responsibilities I have in life but I must say I am enjoying every minute of it. The ability to make others feel special or to create something completely out of the ordinary is sure a lot of fun.

I love working on photo shoots and on set but I must say the ability to make another human feel amazing for a special event is sure something I take pride in. Hearing from a bride after her big day that I made her feel amazing and forget all the illnesses she has been suffering in the lead up made me feel humble and proud that I gave this beautiful soul her dream. She didn’t look sick so didn’t feel sick and her guests where able to forget she was sick for the day.

I have managed to work with some amazing people of the course of the year, Photographers whose talents are out of this world and up and coming ones. The beauty within from models is amazing and working with these has been a real treat. The background of a person is not one you can tell by looking at them, you must open your eyes and look beyond the cover. My creative juices run wild when I meet souls of beauty and to bring out this beauty is a pleasure.

I started this blog so my clients can get to know me. The one who is putting on the makeup, the one behind the brushes, so you can watch my journey, to inspire others and to give you advice and tips along the way.
Let’s start this journey and get to know each other along the way and learn some great makeup tips too.

Dreams come true!

Regards,
Jasmine
